Watch for the Sunset pt 2
I think it is quite difficult to be in a true state of thanksgiving when in anger. I chose to approach these Thanksgiving devotions and bible studies from that perspective. The lessons for teens and children, linked below, give an overview of how God wants our thoughts to turn to "divine appreciation."
"When you are angry, do not sin "Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry....Ephesians 4:26
How do we become truly thankful to God, not only for what He provides, but more importantly for Who He is? Remaining in anger and refusing to forgive becomes a "blessing blocker" and perhaps a "worship blocker," in our relationship with God. Not a great place to be when giving thanks to our all loving and all forgiving God! As in all answers concerning God, we must seek our solution in His Word.
"Put up with each other. Forgive the things you are holding against one another. Forgive, just as the Lord forgave you." Colossians 3:13
God asks that we prepare our hearts to "remember Him" by aspiring to clean up any problems we may have with others. In Matthew 11:27, we are reminded of the importance of this when we partake of Christian communion. He desires we approach Him with a clear conscience.
"Create in me a clean heart, O God; And renew a right spirit within me." Psalm 51:10
We need to allow God to create that clean heart within us. I cannot say that my attitudes in dealing with others are always spot on with how God would have them, nor would all my relationships be as He would lead them. However, I do know I have all that I need from God to extend forgiveness to those whom have wronged me, and my desire is to harm no one. IN FAITH, HE...brings His Holy Spirit into my worship, praise and thanksgiving. My success will be in the seeking of Him and His will.
"But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth.. He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ." 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14
Thanksgiving Day is a traditional time of celebration and fellowship with family, friends, church families and most importantly with God, the creator and giver of all! My challenge is for those who follow Christ Jesus, to sit quietly in prayer for a full twenty minutes, lifting each blessing one at a time, in thanksgiving to Father God! Try it; In doing so, the question of Who He is and how we are to thank Him becomes quite clear. Looking at the "wholeness" of God, we need also look at the Holiness of God! In remembrance of our "Holy God," we see Him worthy of all praise. We can endeavor to give Him the honor and glory He is so deserving of. Our thanksgiving can and should remain faithful and never ending, just as His love for us remains faithful and never ending!
A Prayer to Share:
Mighty and Wonderful Triune God,
Father God, You sent Your Son to redeem me. Savior Jesus, You became "sin" for me that I would not perish. Holy Spirit, You are within me, guiding, comforting and convicting me into "right thinking." Let my thanks giving be for the awesome God You are, and grounded in the truth of Your Word! May the joy of my salvation be shared to the glory of Christ Jesus. Amen
