"IN FAITH, HE..." Devotional from Cherbear

God the Father spoke in The Old Testement Commandments:
These commands are our indictment!
He gave us further instruction in The New Testament Commandments:
Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."
And then, Jesus the Christ provided our pardon!

Third Commandment

You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain. Deuteronomy 5:11

I've put a lot of thought into what it means to "take the Name of the LORD" in vain, finding it entails so much more than just using within a curse word. Being thoughtless about the use of His Name can be just as damaging. When the Name of God or a reference to Him is made, it needs to be in admiration and possibly a reverant fear.

The Name Above All Names

As Chrisitans, when we hear the Lord's name disrespected, it should send an alarm to our brain to denounce such a risky practice. When God Commands we better listen! He is not politely asking us to respect His Name. He has commanded us not to misuse it. When I hear the words "Jesus" and "Jesus Christ" used as slang words, the Holy Spirit within me winces. Jesus is our Savior, Lord and King. We need to remember this each time we hear or begin to use the names of God irreverently.

"Our help comes from the LORD. He is the Maker of heaven and earth." Psalm 124:8

God is the true source of every good thing that happens to and for us. When we are in and kind of trouble, He says for us to "Call upon His Name," and He will come to our aid. Jesus is our strength when we become weak and the source of our joy as well. Why would we "call on" or "trust in" anyone else when our Lord, Himself wants to be our helper?

"Some trust in chariots, some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God. "Psalm 20:7

It is important to God that we trust Him wholeheartedly. If we trust Him we show we have faith He will do what He says He will do. God does not want us to put our faith in anything or anyone other than Him. His children should trust that He is a God who loves them and will answer their prayers. He always answers. Sometimes He asks us to, "Wait." He may even tell us, "No." The more we mature in Him the more often what we ask for is in line with His will. Then we experience His all encompassing, "Yes!" We must pray believing that God knows what is best.

"When the name of Jesus is spoken, every knee in heaven and on earth and under the earth will bow to worship him." Philippians 2:10

Not every person in our world recognizes Jesus' worth. However, we know there is a time to come when they will. The Name of Jesus is the only Name that can save us from God's wrath and judgement of sin. Jesus has shown us the way to forgiveness and a life forever connected to God. The gospel of Mark introduces us to Jesus as the "Servant King." He lived as an example of how we must serve others and rely on the Holy Spirit daily. He became our example, our servant, but none the less, our KING!

"I'm writing these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God. I'm doing it so you will know that you have eternal life." 1John 5:13

John's gospel presents the Deity of Jesus Christ, so all of God's children would know without any doubt they are saved when they believe in "Who Jesus is" and "What Jesus did." In writing the series on the Gospel Writers, I came to believe strongly in the "God inspired," "God breathed," Words of the Bible. John tells us, "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God! And the Word was God!" Read further and you discover John is talking about Jesus. No matter which person of our mighty Triune God I may refer to, IN FAITH, HE... has taught me to respect His WORD and His NAME!

Relating Beatitude

"For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'" Matthew 23:39

Believing in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior sometimes means we do not fit in with the crowd. When saved, our way of thinking begins to change away from worldly thoughts. Our understanding of the words written in the scriptures becomes more clear. Although we cannot know the mind of God, we are blessed by His revelations to us concerning the way He thinks! We can see things we could not see before, and hear things we did not hear before. The Bible says, His Holy Spirit brings truth to our spirit and He will help us speak up and bless the Name of Jesus! We are the blessed!

Lord Jesus,

Let others see in me a desire to give glory and reverance deserving of Your Name. Help me to be a witness who will honor You and live by faith in the powerful and Holy Name of Jesus!
