This is the poster I use when I teach this lesson
A Gospel for Curriculum Kids page at Cherbear's Den!
- It is good for Christian Children's Church, Sunday School or even Christian Home Schooler to remember to leave room for the Holy Spirit to speak when leading children to a knowledge of God's saving grace. I suggest a way to teach this lesson asking you to be flexible and allow some class questions and participation. You can make The Umbrella of God's Grace to fit any age group you are working with!
I begin class asking the Holy Spirit to be in complete charge of the class.
I pray about the words I will use to teach the children and I also pray for their receiving and attention.Make sure to emphasis that God is a Trinity or triune God! It is not that difficult to understand! As follows:God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are Three Persons in One..each with a reason for being! It's like fire: it heats, it burns, it brings light.....3 missions.....still all are fire! One!Make sure they understand eternity! I call God's eternal circle or "forever life."
- Below is the circle of time. Look at it carefully.
- Where on this circle did God began.
- Where will God end?
- What's the problem?
- God has always been and will always be! Let's call this God's forever circle!
- We have a beginning but if Jesus lives in our hearts, we do not have an end.
- Through Jesus alone, God invites us into that circle to live with Him in heaven forever.
- Now, let's change the shape of that circle into an God's Umbrella!
- The circles beneath the God's umbrella we will call the world.
This is a BIG pretend lesson, requiring a BIG imagination!
Introduce God the Father (1st actor), God the Son (2nd actor) and God the Holy Spirit (3rd actor).
A fun Skit to help with understanding:
Items needed for a skit:
- poster of umbrella
- 3 actors (teachers or even kids)
- piece of rope
- coloring pages
- circle drawn on chalk board or poster
scene 1: God the Father (1st actor), Jesus (2nd actor), and Holy Spirit (3rd actor) standing together above the globe (earth). They must be together....all can be holding the umbrella to start the skit...Explain they are Three persons, but they are all together as one, each having a separate mission.
God's Spirit...(3rd actor)..Holds the Umbrella Over the Earth throughout the skit.
The earth belongs to the LORD, and so does everything in it. The world belongs to him. And so do all those who live in it. Psalm 24:1
scene 2: God the Father (1st actor) -Take him away from the group....tie his hands behind his back.
The inner spirit (or hearts) of all people became separated from God when Adam and Eve chose to disobey God and allowed sin to come into the world. They were deceived by satan in the Garden of Eden! Everyone would have to die. No one could live in heaven with God!
When we have sin in our lives....and the sin in the world...ties God's hand behind His back. We are separated from Him. He gives us choices because He loves us.
Jesus (2nd actor) - Take Jesus aside as He dies on the cross and becomes separated from His Father.
Who is Jesus? Jesus is God...He is our Lord!
"All things were created by him...Everything was created by him and for him. He created everything in heaven and on earth...He holds everything together." Colossians 1:16 But God loved the world and all the people in it. He had to make a way for us to come back to Him!
God's only Son "God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son. Anyone who believes in him will not die but will have eternal life."John 3:16
scene 3: Jesus - (2nd actor) Jesus shines the flashlight over the globe...shining His light on the world!
What did Jesus do for us?
Jesus died on the cross and was raised from the dead into a new life with God the Father into heaven! He made our way back to God...He did not sin and He did not deserve to die. We sin and we did not deserve to be forgiven. He took all of our punishment...so God the Father would see us without the sin.
God says, "I am going to have to send my Son Jesus to save lost people. They do not know Me! The Son of Man came to look for the lost and save them." Luke 19:10
What did Jesus do for us?
scene 4: Untie God's hands... God the Father (1st actor) Father God joins them and all three hold the umbrella once again.
What did He show us?
Jesus showed us how we can have our spirit connected to God the Father!
"I have come into the world to be a light. No one who believes in me will stay in darkness." John 12:46 Jesus replied, "What I am about to tell you is true. No one can see God's Kingdom without being born again." John 3:3
Jesus (2nd actor), and Holy Spirit (3rd actor) The Holy Spirit pulls Jesus under the umbrella once again!
God the Father (1st actor), Jesus (2nd actor), and Holy Spirit (3rd actor).....Jesus still shines the light on the world.
"He wins the battle for us because of what our Lord Jesus Christ has done." 1 Corinthians 15: 57
God the Father (1st actor), Jesus (2nd actor), and Holy Spirit (3rd actor) stand over the globe again. Jesus holds the light on the world. The Holy Spirit covers the world with the umbrella. and The Father has His hands under as if to have the world in His hands.
What do we have to do? How do we become children of God...with our spirit connected to His?
We must believe that Jesus is God's only Son, that He died and was raised into heaven in a new forever life with Father God. We must receive the free gift of our new life with God.
This new birth is the new birth of our old spirit into a new spirit that is connected to God. His Holy Spirit comes to live in our hearts.
Close in Praying thanking God for His presence
"Our faith has won the battle for us. Who is it that has won the battle over the world? Only the person who believes that Jesus is the Son of God." 1 John 5:4
and requesting understanding into His plan of salvation!
Color God's Saving Grace Umbrella!
If the Spirit prompts you...lead the children in a sinner's prayer..such as:
Please pray with me!
I understand that I do bad things. You call this sin. I ask You to fill my empty heart with Jesus. I believe that Jesus is Your Son. He was punished for my sins. He died for me on the cross because He loves me. He lives again. Please forgive the bad things I have done. Thank you for sending Your Holy Spirit to live inside of me. Help me to be like Jesus. Thank you God, for your wonderful plan. I am Your child! Jesus is my Lord and my very best Friend!
